Supporting Independent Bookstores

Hi, we own an independent bookstore in West Virginia...we have done well, but the book industry is having some trouble. Of course it's more sustainable nowadays to order an e-book (which can now be done through your local independent bookstore, unless you have a Kindle which makes you beholden to Amazon) and save resources of ink, paper, transportation, etc. What do folks think about independent bookstores? We hope to make our store a source of information and community outreach for Transition.

I'm not putting our store name on here because I know this is not a place to advertise...but please remember that your local independent bookstore can't survive if you support large multinational companies.

Hope to send out some great titles in future posts!!

Great to God to find your interests on a store that serves broader information and community outreach (like Transition). Recollected details from our chats (together with Les Squires) on your vision for a Christian Transition. There's a very enlightening Christian Bible Study On Green Issues: 'Going Green For God', offered by ChristianityToday.com; The website moderators have been very kind to allow the weblink to the Bible Study to run on ALL TRANSITION Customized Search Engine. I hope you find a way to keep the bookstore. I don´t like chain bookstores. They are so impersonal! Although I am a writer and a teacher, I stopped patronizing big chain bookstores for a long time. But I have found a beautiful second-hand bookstore near my school. The owner is wonderful. I stop by or e-mail her whenever I need something special - music, videos, books... She finds them, even in Spanish. My work and my life would be much less interesting and complete without that bookstore.

Good luck. I think there are a lot of intelligent people around who would drop by if they knew you exist.

Thanks, Resurreccion...we have many local customers who give us business. It's just hard to keep up the pace when there are chains and online sources competing.

Great to read your discussion on local independent bookstores and very great that you now have one going in connection with TransitionInAction! There's one point I'd love to clarifying with regards to supporting Local Independent bookstores including your recently opened one: What are The Reference Titles you suggest or have compiled for books to be offered through such platforms?

Hi Akin, if you go to www.fourseasonsbooks.com, on the green bar you will see the words "Sustainable Living." If you click on that it will take you to our list of books on sustainability subjects. It does need to be updated right now but that can get you started!

It was worthwhile and inspiring visting the sustainable- living weblink on fourseasonsbooks.com. Particularly, I was drawn to books under the 'first steps' and 'simple living' book categories but on the whole it would be great to hint and refer to you Christian authors with a writing bend to the sustainable living category of fourseasonbooks! Would you be willing to take on this approach? God counting, I'd be quite glad to be on the lookout for Christian authors, books and other written resources that fit into this category?

Hi Akin, sure, let me know...I know there are a small number of such titles, but I don't know how well they would sell on our site. There's even a "Green Bible," I have not seen it yet!!

Finding people interested in buying would be the challenge...but let me know what you come across.

Great to God to have read your last response. Thanks for the hint about The Green Bible. It would be worthwhile to have reads and learn from such an adaptable publication. In relation to the discussions and prospects about Christian books and authors with a writing bend for the Fourseasonbooks sustainable living category; thought to ask you if your vision for sustaining independent bookstores includes the possibility that such bookstores themselves get print rights working alongside with authors to produce a sizeable number of such books? That's on the planning side.

On the issue of finding buyers for such titles, my experience with the truth of this; is that the last time i attempted offering Christian related content with an intention to profiteering; i got broken. The Gospel of Christ has her own sustainability rules both in word, print and action.

Now, for something that links to Transition Values and vision of resilience; I'm interested in learning about developing Recycling/Deinking printers that can take care of wrinked, smudgy and damp paper grades. God willing, working models of such Recycling/Deinking printers will be great offerings to Independent Bookstores like Fourseasonsbooks; who have an interest in passing along Christian Sustainability linked titles. And on a research note, i'd love to ask how much from your experience does a typical Independent Bookstore come in contact with volumes of wrinkled, smudgy or damp paper grades or waste paper that can be deinked or recycled? Reckon any figures?
