I love the ning site. I love seeing who is new and connecting with that person. I love seeing the new events pop up under the events tab. I love seeing recent activity, and being able to see comments left for others. I love to see who blogs what, and why. I love the profiles, and learn a lot about who the Transition movement is attracting. I love hitting the F5 button and seeing the site change. I love the ning site. I really do.

Working with Transition Longmont has been quite a journey. It's been wonderful meeting people who are excited about creating community. Our meetings have been well attended and we now have 54 members (out of 85,000 residents).

One problem we've encountered is the resistance to anything "Boulder" (aka "liberal"). There is a conservative faction in this town and they believe we (Transition Longmont) are a threat. We recently had a front page article in the Longmont Times-Call about the Transition movement and our local group, but the bloggers who commented online were calling us socialists, marxists, etc. (see: http://www.timescall.com/News_Story.asp?id=14645). I can't imagine why these people feel so threatened by us?

We've experienced significant growing pains and our last meeting ended in chaos. However, anyone familiar with systems theory will know that order forms out of chaos. We had to experience it to start fresh.

We have a new initiating committee that just met for the first time last night and they are all very motivated and willing to commit. However, our group seems to be following step 11 - let it go where it wants to go (yes, I know we're out of sequence but we'll mature).

Things are looking up for us. Transition is the only movement that gives me hope in light of all the difficulties that are coming our way whether we like it or not. I always think about the children (think Moody Blues - "To Our Children's Children's Children"). If they are to have any quality of life, we need to do this work NOW.

I also want to thank Michael Brownlee and Lynette Marie for the incredible work they've done launching Transition in Colorado and throughout the U.S., and Les, for creating this Ning site, for all of us to connect.

Hi Les,

The Transition Champaign County (IL) site has taken off very quickly with about 130 members in a little over two months.

We've had a fair bit of good discussion, but not much concrete action yet. I am hoping to attend the Transistion Workshop in Bloomington, IN next month to get more ideas on how to get real projects going.

Thanks to all the wonderful people who are contributing and participating in Transition U.S. You are the Transition movement!

Perhaps no one will ever truly know the scale and significance of the contribution he is making, but I nominate Les Squires as TRANSITIONER OF THE YEAR for his yeoman efforts in bringing the Transition Ning sites to life! I'm really grateful for what TransitioNING has made possible for the Transition movement in such a short period of time.

I was really active when I first started on the Ning site and am now spending more time with in-person conversations. I have run into a neighbor through the Ning site and met Adam Brock (http://wildgreenyonder.wordpress.com) through Ning.

Definitely a useful platform for community members looking to connect, inspire, and make change in their communities..

The first 180 days,finding those that are awake and paying attention! local people finding work right here at home making the products that our needed right here not imported stuff, just keep on bringing people together ONE FRIEND AT A TIME thats how it works for me thanks les

Thanks to Les for inspirationally enlarging our communication platform. Thanks to the UK and Ireland spawners of Transition having the foresight to base Transition on the Permaculture model! And thanks to Michael Brownlee for his tireless work ushering in Transition from the UK & Ireland.

The Scale of village town and city cycling back to neghborhood will be the measure of its success.

My intuition has been strong, that the Transition movement is in sync with the natural law flow, we need to emulate, to regain our sustainable and balanced lives once more. The energy I have witnessed and know is flowing, is a good example of a practical, nicely paced, decentralized and active movement, that is inspirational and open.

Transition is a really good umbrella or safe haven if you will, to cultivate support systems, allies, friends and actualized projects. We were never alone, but now that is ever so much more apparent, with the new age of communications.

I look forward, to at long last, transplanting all of Transition Town, into the physical world.

We model our future, in our daily lives and the example we set, by our actions bolsters true community.

I am still trying to see what role Ning will play for me and Transition Hudson Valley. Right now it's the only concrete thing the we have as a group, we haven't made the big leap out into the "real world" yet. But here are some notes:

I get excited when people I have never met join our Ning site, because it means people are talking about it. And it's great as opposed to a standard website because I can see the new people who are following along. Though several people have mentioned to me looking at the site and haven't created profiles, so they are still anonymous. I am thinking that once we get going we'll have a Ning training session and mass sign-up from a common computer.

In terms of Transition Hudson Valley, I think the Ning site will ultimately play a key role. The Transition work will take place in towns throughout the valley and everyone will be able to network online without having to drive long distances to meet with each other. The Hudson Valley is a big geographic area and we don't want to be contributing to climate change for the sake of collaborating on Transition. Ning seems like a more low-impact route to take.

And I did run into someone (without a profile on Transition Hudson Valley) at an event I had posted on there. He said that's where he found out about it. So that was neat... seeing that the time I spend online is having an impact in what people do in the "real world."

You may notice this common theme I am wresting with, of "real" versus "virtual" world. I think Transition is all about people talking to people in person, and Ning can't replace these interactions, but it can allow people to communicate between meetings, share photos, communicate over long distances, etc. For example, if I, on the east coast, can have a discussion with people on the west coast about a project I'd like to start up, it's much quicker, cheaper and more sustainable to have that on Ning than in person.

Les, et al ... The TransitioNING options are really great and cutting edge if not bleeding edge. In addition to membership on the US, Colorado, TranstionTownLyons and other sites, I have created three personal social networks. Although somewhat inactive on those, I know that they are going to be very useful as my work in Transition expands and our time moves forward. The Social Networking options are very creative and I hope that more people will take advantage of the possibility of creating personal sites. NETWORKING & COMMUNITY is what it is all about. Our RESILIENCE will be reflected in these sites as we evolve! Thank you Les for your forward-looking vision in facilitating our work here on the TransitioNING sites!
