From Richard Sidy - Gardens for Humanity

The email below is about an event that was inspired by our Verdean meetings, and consequently, a proposal I made to Steve DeVol of KSB for collaboration. It  is part of "telling our story" and of finding out what people are already doing in our community to live sustainably and harmoniously in our neighborhoods. The goal of an "Idea Garden" tour is to give people ideas of what they can do right at home to become part of the transition to sustainability.

This event may also serve to publicize the vision of how the Verdean network is aiming at solving urgent global needs on a local level. Our ultimate goal is to make this an annual event that will raise awareness of "acting locally while thinking globally."

Your feedback and participation are most welcome! Feel free to forward this to others who might be interested in participating.

Subject: [Gardens for Humanity] "Idea Gardens Tour" Committee
At our Executive Board meeting this week we agreed to collaborate with Keep Sedona Beautiful on a garden tour for next September.

We need to find a committee leader and put together a team to work with the committee from KSB. If you know anyone who you think would make a good leader please give me their contact information if they are willing.
The qualities we are looking for are:
• Creative
• Team worker
• Well-organized
• Networker
• Enthusiastic about gardens and nature

The tour will feature examples of how humans interface with nature for beauty and sustainability in Sedona's unique environment. Some of the "Idea Gardens" would be:
• Sustainable gardens
• Food gardens/ Permaculture
• Xeroscape
• Native Plants and Landscape
• Rainwater harvesting
• Art in Gardens
• Bird and Wildlife attracting gardens
• Gardens at places of business
• Gardens for peace and contemplation

If you can't be a leader but would like to serve on the committee, let me know.

The purpose of organizing this event is to provide an educational and inspiring experience for participants, celebrate some of Sedona's special gardens, create a tourism opportunity, provide outreach and publicity in the community, raise money, showcase the missions of Gardens for Humanity and Keep Sedona Beautiful, build and sustain membership.

We appreciate your input. Feel free to forward this email to anyone you think might be interested in helping out.

Great, Richard. Just the thing we’re looking for – and a fun event, too. You can use the http://transitionus.ning.com/group/VRC to share with everyone in the Verde Resilient Communities network.

We need to use the site to share information and projects like this – mostly to build the habit of collaboration. It only takes a couple of extra minutes.

Meanwhile, I only have 3 people in the VRC group on TransitionUS.ning.com – now that we’ve migrated off Transition Arizona. Come on over.

By the way, I had a great meeting with the leaders of Friends of Flagstaff’s Future (F3) – the Transitions group for Flagstaff. We’re going to be collaborating with them on all sorts of things.

Plus the VVREO Sustainable Agriculture Group had a wonderful visioning session this morning – it’s a great group that can help facilitate much of our transition efforts when it comes to food production and distribution in the Verde Valley.

Then, the SEDI board met today – and once again supported our VRC initiatives. We’re underway.
Thank you and Jawn for your ideas and info! A seminar on wheels between gardens - I like that. Especially if the speaker has previewed the garden and can give the visitors an "anticipatory set" (teacher talk for "to know what to look for"). That adds another dimension. Steve and I did talk about getting sponsors, and if perhaps Dawn could pursue a grant for us that would be great!

I now have names of three potential project coordinators, and will talk to Carolyn this afternoon. Georgia is currently in Maine for the summer so will not be a "hands on" leader. We have some ideas for future collaborations, however.

Right now we should all be thinking of developing an educational model that can be applied across the Verde Valley - farm and sustainability tours, etc. These could develop into keynotes for getting our story out there and move the viewers to new choices as consumers and community members. Also, it will be encouraging for people to see how we verdeans are becoming a resilient community.

Richard
