Welcome Kevin! You're just the kind of newcomer we value -- as you say -- "I am learning about edible forest gardens, installed on this past year. I'm learning to ferment foods as a means of food storage. Mostly I have a desire to see a local transition initiative and I'm willing to work towards it."

Several things have come together for me that have made it easier to explain Peak Oil to my group. Richard Heinberg's Peak Everything and Stephen Kestler's Mineral Resources, Economics, and the Environment helped me understand how important the issue of resource depletion is and how it goes far beyond fossil fuels.

Explaining it all without making a long speech was still an issue for me until I re-watched The Story of Stuff and saw Annie Leonard explain our system of consumption as a linear system that is unsustainable in a finite world.

I now tell folks that we need to design systems that close the loops or we are headed for trouble when the resources run out.

As a newcomer, when you come across some item where you say "AHA! Now I really get it! And now I can better tell the Transition story to others in my locality.", please paste a sentence or two describing what you discovered in the COMMENT WALL below. Do some scouting for the rest of us...

I think you have to start with things that are do-able. We are doing a movie and discussion series once a month. We had a more ambitious schedule this summer and it fell apart. Do what you can.

Greetings! We have 109 members in this newcomers group. It's time to ask the question of what brought each of us here to Transition. Some comment somebody made? A video? A meeting you attended? TV? Training session? Particular website? Google? An AHA! How about using the COMMENT WALL below to paste in your most powerful motivator. Be sure include full URLS for any websites you site. And if 8-10 of you would like to assist in creating useful entries for the NEWCOMER PORTFOLIO, feel free to request to be an Editor.

This should be really interesting!

I think that perhaps I belong in here! I am not a professional with the transition movement. I have however belonged to intentional households and done the whole hippie/commune thing as a kid. I see that the transition movement seems to expand on what I have always been interested in. I love that there is a "grass roots" feeling to it all. That people are making personal changes that are beginning to move entire communities is exciting in a positive way.

I first heard about Transition at a spiritual retreat in Maryland. Prior, I had been thinking about trying to form a local community group to deal with societal problems at a local level, so when I heard about Transition, it was exactly the idea that I had been waiting for. The Transition concept is so positive and incorporates a variety of different goals and values, so I was immediately enthusiastic about it.

Think for a minute what it was that first clicked when the penny dropped and you "got it" -- got Transition, that is. A meeting? A video? A newspaper article? A friend's comment? A website? Television? Documentary? A particular insight? An AHA! Some metaphor? A special experience. Where were you when the penny dropped? We'll have 100 different stories.... Wow.

Hi Folks! Just trying to get the hang of navigating this rabbit warren. There is so much information here! Looking for ideas and support on drawing together interested and active people and groups in my area to quilt together their efforts into something with presence. Lots of local awareness of ecology, lots of local food producers, electric car or GEM drivers, cyclists, walkable community advocates, etc. Fantastic things happening that I want to help weave together with some awareness of purpose and of each other.

Eager to learn...
