Thanks all for the ideas! I have Rob Hopkins' Transition Handbook out of the library right now, and plan to see if they'll let me add a slip of paper to the book with the email and blog URLs I've set up as an online meeting point for us. Also mentioned it to a music friend last night who also happens to be librarian at the local community college, so she's going to get it for their library too (and she's come across the Transition idea before and is interested).

Local food - yes, many of my contacts are in the garden/farm/food/seedsaving community so that part would be easy, and in fact is already moving well (see http://thetyee.ca/Life/2006/08/08/LocalEating/ and that was 2.5 years ago) - it's other areas which need more attention.

Thanks David for sharing the brochure. It's looking better all the time. Love the picture of the Marketplace.

To all the rest of us: Feel free to invite other newcomers in your locality to join our group here. You'll find a link to INVITE MORE PEOPLE in the upper right corner of our group page.

Hi Beth

I am attaching a flyer we use in Transition Louisville to introduce Transitions. Feel free to copy and adapt what you want for your needs.

A note of caution: Please keep in mind you are doing the "A Phase" - that is Awareness Raising and Laying Foundations. So the caution is to always keep your eye on these two crucial first steps and don't go too deeply into Local Food as your singular focus.

thanks

Hi,

I'm also just getting started and have done what David has suggested. We have decided to start with local food issues as our starting point for building transition support in the area. We are beginning to do awareness building, working to expand and add additional farmers markets in some of the smaller communities in our area, trying to create a farmer's coop store for access to year-round local foods, and working with schools and teachers on school gardens through the local master gardener resources.

Hi Kevin
I am in an Initiating Group in Louisville Colorado USA
I encourage you to not seek out the 'usual suspects' but rather to seek out a few folks who 'get it' around peak oil and climate change and are willing to do something about it and for whom Transitions makes sense.
Then each of you look to your passions and start there - if you are passionate about local food for example start networking w others who feel the same and start doing Awareness Raising w them

by the way this is the most exciting thing, Transitions, that I have done in years!!!

GO FOR IT
cheers
david

Any suggestions as to best ways to pull together a core group for beginning transition efforts, given that the "usual suspects" in town are all frantically working on projects already, or burned out from same.
