Comment by Mary Saunders on February 19, 2011 at 10:53pm: Thanks, Bert. I did not mean to put down the recommendation, I just jumped on the mention of the natives topic and what it can easily lead to. I have participated in adding useful plants to roadsides, and I agree that is good practice.

Comment by Bert Harvey on February 19, 2011 at 10:45pm: like I said, I don't buy the native only approach, but this book does offer other practical methodologies for land restoration. There are a number of tools inside that I certainly believe permaculturalist could use to further their efforts.

Comment by Mary Saunders on February 19, 2011 at 5:47pm: Tha natives-only thing is a ruse to make herbicides seem legitimate, from my point of view. Toby Hemenway and others have weighed in on this as well. Monsanto "donates" to The Nature Conservancy and other groups. With climate change, humans do not know what will thrive where. Assuming you can use poison to "help" particular plants in the usual human hubris. What's more, Himalayan blackberry, though not native, shelters native animals whose other shelter has been knocked out. More aware stewards take only some out at a time, to leave the shelter for creatures.

Roadside Revegetation: An integrated approach to establishing native plants

produced by the Federal Highway Administration/US dept. of transportation.

Hands down the best book on the nuts and bolts of restoring damaged, deranged, or otherwise mis-used landscapes. Best of all, it's free. (least, it was when I got my copy from the US dept. Transportation).

They also have an educational website that supports the book and stands really strongly on its own as a great source of information.

I'm not super keen on the "natives only" approach, as it seems to assume a certain baseline normalcy that I simply don't believe ever existed, this book does give detailed directions on everything from slope stabilization, live-staking, hydrological control, and everything in between. As a permie interested in the nuts and bolts, this book is pretty much a goldmine and the data can easily be viewed through the lens of permaculture to create some very solid solutions to various issues.

Comment by Bert Harvey on February 7, 2011 at 1:26pm: I was lucky and had both Larry and Michael speak at my PDC - both are highly inspirational. I enjoyed listening to Larry speak, more so for his tendency to go from the profound to the profane in the same sentence. :)

He is more sardonic and adult-appropriate than Michael Becker, but the class sat rapt for every word from Larry as well. I have nine hours of Larry on video that I am contemplating convening an adult pajama party to watch some day...
