I'll go ahead and start a Facebook site for Transition Cascadia,
as I find Facebook a bit easier to communicate or recruit
new members on. Transition United States is also on Facebook
as well as many other organizations looking at moving toward
resilience. Give me a day and look us up on Facebook.

Thanks, Heather. Our town of Anacortes decided last night
to initiate a Transition Initiative called Transition Fidalgo.
I also started one on Facebook. Since the Transition United
States will not go away considering the change in Ning
\policy, I hope to restart ou efforts here to create a
network and networking event. ANyone still out there?
Heather, I know you are and thank you for continuing
to post.

Lane and Heather, before jumping ship, why not check with Les? And it's possible that Transition US may want to take this over or incorporate it into their site. The ning site provides some of the social networking capabilities that we had on the Relocalization Network site (Post Carbon Institute) and which are not now done on the Transition US site.

Michael Brownlee resigned from the Transition US board last month.

Bill, thanks for your welcoming response. Yes, we plan to come to Seattle. Would you email me at janaia@peakmoment.tv so I have your email address?
Thanks. Hope to hear from others, too. ~Janaia

Thank you all for responding. Here is
the new Ning plan if you have not
received it:
http://about.ning.com/announcement/
As you can see, there will be a penalty
in having more than 150 members, which means
that small, independent Transition sites
like Transition Whatcom and Transition
Victoria will be hurt, nas I see it. Tamara and
Heather, I suggest a Facebook site. It will
remain free because it is so big and I am
finding that in spite of some drawbacks, it
is being used by very high quality organizations
including the Louvre, Modern Museum of Art,
Seattle Art Museum and the BC Museum in
Victoria (I think). It is still a very raw deal fo
the folks using Ning that have been successful
using Ning for communications. Transition
Whatcom has a Facbeek site and thankfully they
just had their unleashing.I would like to comment
on Heathers' last comment concerning seeds soon.
Comment by Heather K on May 5, 2010 at 1:12am
There is a growing interest in Whatcom county (Mt. Baker to Salish Sea bioregion) to connect & find farmers who understand the value of saving our own seed for grains/beans/vegis, and creating local ordinances that restrict any import or growing of genetically modified organism seeds, grain, or feed. Pass they word if there are successful farmer advocates in your region.

If anyone wants my email address to stay in contact through any changes here, leave me yours on my comment page.

Re Lane's comment about whether or not the ning.com sites will consider closing down pre-existing ning.com groups if money is not received:

My impression is that Micheal Brownlee is the creator of the TransitionUSA ning.com site, under which Transition Cascadia is sub-group. I do not think he has yet posted anything in regards to what he is considering doing re the possability of any ning.com fees.

There is also the TransitionUS.org website http://www.transitionus.org/
Quote: "Transition US is a nonprofit organization that provides inspiration, encouragement, support, networking, and training for Transition Initiatives across the United States. We are working in close partnership with the Transition Network, a UK based organization that supports the international Transition Movement as a whole." endquote.

Micheal Brownlee is also on the board of this non-profit, along with Richard Heinberg, Vicki Robins, and about 10 others, plus executive director Carolyne Stayton. Their names are listed here: http://www.transitionus.org/about-us/team

Lane, thanks for keeping track of the ning.com politics and keeping us informed.
The online computer networking is a wonderful globel communication tool, as is Skype.
Sometimes I think though, that the energy it uses in electricity, and the time spent online, is reducing the time humans spend outside caring for the earth & growing food, is reducing time spent face to face with each other, and reducing opportunities for us to take more walks in our neighborhoods and learn how we can work together with our neighbors.
I do really appreciate the connections, and the time we have all spent in recording resources that can be helpful to many. I don't know enough about the differing blogs and how they work. Lane, if you do what you propose, do let us know. And take care to not allow the time it takes to do computer work, keep you to long from planting & caring for your garden or connecting with friends & neighbors. (and I'm trying to do the same!)

About the cost of Ning, Since we are a part of TransitionUS, there is not so much of an individual issue, but how all of us are part of a bigger network,, perhaps this is a question for Les what his plans are. There is a lot of social capital built up here and part of it is the connections. Lets use this challenge as an opportunity to find a permaculture solution. The problem is the solution!
what can we do together?

Janaia - great to have you in the region. if you come to Seattle, we can put you up and would love to do something with you as Transition Seattle and if it makes sense, potentially make connections for you with other groups in our fair city and surrounding (Olympia, Port Townsend etc.. Also have some folks you might like to visit on Vancouver Island, though I am sure you have connections there as well. Contact me if this is helpful!

Love, Bill

Hello Transition Cascadians ~ before the slate is swept clean ~ I wanted to let folks know that we will be traveling up your way to videotape Peak Moment TV conversations this August and September. Robyn and I are looking for interesting projects and people to tape; (2) groups who'd like us to come share and dialogue (like a book talk format about what we see happening in the transition/relocalization movement, plus some cross-pollinating with you); safe stopping places along the route (primarily I-5 in the states, up to Vancouver, over to Vancouver Island, probably back to the Olympic peninsula).

You can reach me at janaia@peakmoment.tv. Let me hear from you, sister/fellow Cascadians.
