Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
Recently began to explore the movement for possible mention as a role model in my documentary, Hooked on Growth: Our Misguided Quest for Prosperity.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I firmly believe our children's survival and well-being depend on us shifting away from valuing economic growth and increasing consumption. This movement offers a good value system to replace the obsolete one.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement? What can YOU teach us? What can your GROUP teach us?
My film examines the superstitions, addictions and delusions that we must leave behind in order to become a sustainable society. It will help shift the thinking of the world and prep it for transition. I also hope I can offer my filmmaking expertise to Transition projects as time permits.

Save the Polar Bear in Your Bedroom

Posted on March 10, 2010 at 3:30pm 0 Comments

It’s been a great night. Romantic dinner for two. Fine organic wine. A little dancing in the living room. John Klemmer’s saxophone is putting you in the mood. It’s the right time of the night…for making love. Good thing you have the right tool in your hands to save the polar bear – an endangered species condom.

I'll be at the film screenings Thursday night. I'll see what materials I can provide to you, or will at least make time to plumb your footage needs. You project is inspiring! I am sending around a request for accommodating you both. I really wish I could.

Almost a jackpot. I cannot attend the De-Growth workshop and will be away from Vancouver starting Friday noon through Tuesday. Perhaps we could meet up on Thursday after your arrival or earlier Friday morning.
As for accommodations, I can't help you there as Vancouver has condemned my heritage home (hence part of my anger). I will check around, though. It sounds like you'll need space for 2. What time of day do you arrive?

Dave,

You are on the right track, and Vancouver is a perfect paragon of all the negative aspects of growth. SIted in a once beautiful environment inhabited by hundreds of thousands of native settlers living comfortably off the land, the growth at any cost mentality here has destroyed our renewable resources--salmon, forests, farmland, and even water--and has created the worst bubble economy on earth.

We are building thousands of new condos a year, in glass and steel towers impossible to insulate for cold and intolerable greenhouses in the summer without air conditioning. No one locally can afford these unsustainable "little boxes filled with tick-tacky," as they are priced at over 9 times the median family income here, and thus the most expensive housing in the world (UN data).

We thus have thousands of homeless living on the street, with numbers growing every year despite a "full employment" economy leading up to our recently winter Owe-lympics event. Condo towers built on top of retail have also starved us of any and all community gathering points, and thus atomizing our diverse population.

Meanwhile, we dump essentially raw sewage into our bays and inlets at all times, and during heavy rains, you can remove the word "essentially." We also directly dump millions of cubic metres of our most polluted urban soils right into the ocean, PAHs and PCBs included. No testing, no regulation, no penalties.

Now, I and a group called the Vancouver Media Cooperative have footage, mostly in 1080i HDV, of all of what I describe. It is easy to get more and you may see much more signs of decay we have not recognized. We also have a large number of highly articulate activists to interview, on every subject from Peak Oil to homelessness.

In the land of the lotus-eaters, Hooked on Growth is right at home.
