Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I've had the two day Transition Training taught by Sophy and Naresh from Transition Totnes, and I'm one of seven in the Initiating Group for Transition Whatcom. I'm the administrator/moderator for the Transition Whatcom social networking site: http://transitionwhatcom.ning.com.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I've been concerned about Peak Oil and climate change since seeing The End of Suburbia in 2004. I'm on the Vision Team for Sustainable Bellingham (part of the Relocalization Network), which has numerous similarities to the Transition Towns idea, and I'm currently serving on a local Energy Resource Scarcity/Peak Oil Task Force.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement? What can YOU teach us? What can your GROUP teach us?
The things I've learned from working with Sustainable Bellingham, as well as working with Cascadia Training and Mediation will prove to be very useful I believe.

Communication Skills for Change Agents: FREE Videos

I’ve said this before:

I think one of the biggest challenges for Transition groups is to learn the skills of how to work effectively as a group in terms of having efficient meetings that are inclusive, enjoyable, and get a lot accomplished. Learning to work together effectively may be one of the most important things we do to prepare for peak oil, climate change, and economic…

Local Solutions from a Peak Oil Task Force: A Briefing Paper

Posted on November 8, 2009 at 6:16pm 0 Comments

Last week I wrote here about the Creation of a Local Peak Oil Task Force in Bellingham and Whatcom County.

Today I want to share the Briefing Paper that was prepared in advance of the task force. This paper was written to accompany and support the City and County Resolutions creating the task force in May of 2008. Some will want to read the 8 page paper as one document - please see the pdf… Continue

The Creation of a Local Peak Oil Task Force

Posted on November 1, 2009 at 7:16pm 0 Comments

The Energy Resource Scarcity / Peak Oil (ERSPO) Task Force of Bellingham and Whatcom County will soon be releasing its report. In preparation, I thought it would be a good idea to provide some background.

In the spring of 2007, local peak oil educator John Rawlins suggested to me that it might be a good idea to pass around a petition in support of a peak oil task force here in Bellingham, Washington. I didn't have time to get a petition drive going, but soon after that… Continue

David: Thank you for wishing me a happy birthday. I
have been out of commission for the last month and
a half with hip problems. It is getting to be too much
to run two properties. If you know of anyone who would
like to run a program in permaculture, organic farming
and alternative building, please let me know.

My best. Lane Transition Whatcon/Transition Bellingham
is really moving along. Madrona is interested in supporting
the effort, but we have found little support to start an
initiative on Guemes or in Anacortes. I hope to contribute
by developing a resource base for the movement in some
way.

Take care. Lane

Hi David! Thanks for the note. Yes, I made the trek across the country to settle in Halifax for a year...from one ocean to the other! How are things in Bellingham? Hope you are too snowed in!

Happy New Year, David! I really savored your Relocalized Christmas letter and idyllic winter wonderland photos.

I hope we'll cross paths in the New Year!

David: I have been reading through your relocalization material. And
note how busy you see to be. Seems all who see change on the
horizon are madly busy.

At Madrona, we hope to find a hive full of young people that can
help us organize, probably starting in the Whatcom/Skagit area.
I'll see if I can finally see Cindi (I think we both have changed a
little in 30 years).

How do you think we could the Transition/Relocalization ideas
along?

David: Congratulations on all the work you have done with Sustainable Bellingham. At Madrona Center, we are getting more ande more students from Western, Fairhaven and WCC visiting and starting work in our programs:

A friend of morre than 30 years, Cindy Landreth, is going to the Transition Training session in Portland and then to Trainers Training in San Francisco. My wife and I just returned from the session in Victoria, B.C. and will try to circulate what we learned.

Transition Towns seems to be similiar to programs offered through the Post Carbon Institute, although our experience after meeting and working with these Brits from Totnes is that they are inspired!

Welcome David and soon to be Transition Washington! Great to see you here. "...The things I've learned from working with Sustainable Bellingham, as well as working with Cascadia Training and Mediation will prove to be very useful I believe..." -- We believe so too. We look forward to learning lots from your experiences!

We invite you to go to Starting Local Groups on Transition US and then to Washington. Tell us a little more about what's happening in your neighborhood. This makes your group visible to other groups in Washington and elsewhere around the world. Be sure to ask questions as they arise.
