Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I am currently doing some virtual facilitation of the PowerDown project, an Austrian government-funded project with more than 25 experts aiming at practical contact with actors in the communal, regional and local field to help augment transition initiatives. When Sandi Brockway asked me to do Transition Europe I grasped the opportunity and try to connect it with the work of these experts, facilitating information exchange throughout Europe and beyond.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
There is a deeper approach called Global Villages which tries to develop prototypes and patterns for successful local communities especially in rural areas that combine rootedness with global outlook. part of this pattern is self-reliance in many daily issues including energy.
The GlobalVillages approach emphasizes on the use of communication between villages to strentgthen their potentials - thus allowing to focus much more on local development and everything that is connected with it. Since we intend to intend to help building up educational networks fostered by broadband connections we have very much in Common with the Transition network
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement? What can YOU teach us? What can your GROUP teach us?
I think that these two approaches go well with each other. I also invite you to join the Global Villages Network: see Background

Franz, thanks for joining the Future Dawning Enterprises Group. Looking forward to learning more about your approach via Global Villages.

Hi Franz,
I am presently trying to find communities that are indeed self-sufficient (or close to it) food-wise. Are any of the "villages" able to sustain themselves? Reading about Global Villages, I get the sense that the interconnectedness aspect has received more thought so far than the "self-sufficient" aspect. For example, I don't see a definition of what that would mean. The Transition Towns movement is expressing a concern that permaculture, for example, is a great idea, but essentially unproven.

Hi Franz. I have found this:
It is natural, that the discussion should take place there. We thought, that nothing is yet happening in Italy, but I have learned better and I am very relieved. Because I live in Germany, not in Italy. Cristiano Bottone of has proposed, that I participate in their ning and report on what is going on in Germany. It is reasonable that I do that and people in Italy organize the transition in Italy. My next step is to visit the "Falacosagiusta" (do the right thing) -Fair on march 13-15 in Milan. This fair is a brainstorming session. I encourage people to visit it, especially those who understand italian...

Franz...Hello again. I've been checking out your dorfwiki site and the Global Villages Network site. I definitely need to check into these more fully as the information exchange possibilities are endless and wonderful. So much of what we do at BACK40 is to this end that having a presence their is important. The owner's Herm Beck and Linda Lee are also great fans of the "Pattern Language" concept and refer often to it's presence in how we work and live. I look forward to checking out Tony's book as well. Do you have contact info for Tony? I see his Thouse page and BlooLagoon info but failing to find more info on his book. Can you possibly be of some help here? Cheers, Donna

Franz...Enjoyed reading about what you are working on. On a smaller scale we are doing something similar at Back 40. We live and work in the Ozarks of south central Missouri. The nearest town of any size is some 20 miles away. We have a number of hi-tech businesses under the umbrella of the Back 40 Group and are hoping to increase the number of local folks we can employ, slowly building to where we can really offer graduating students who are interested in sustainability and self-sufficiency a way to stay in the area. I think I have looked at the Global Village site before but I'll check it out again. Cheers, Donna
