Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
Mainly just thinking about it a lot!
Technology should empower people but in our current cultural paradigm it actually enslaves them to a complex society because regular people can no longer build and run the machines they need to make their lives more productive. Developing a robust tool kit such as the one you are working on will not only hep people in developing nations, but also make it possible for peope in (over)developed regions to get off the grid and really live their lives, soup to nuts, doing it all themselves but with the power of an understandable, maintanable set of machines to multiply their efforts.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
Our extended family includes four bright teenagers who will go into science and engineering fields and who are in the full bloom of their youthful idealism. We know that one or two formative experiences can forwever change the path kids like this take in life.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement? What can YOU teach us? What can your GROUP teach us?
Our kids have all had to take these Tech Ed classes which unfortunately are pretty dumded-down, just nibbling around the edges of big tech. I really think building some sort of education tool kit about sustainable technology that could get plugged into the public school circulum would be a great way to get bright, young people into the pipeline now, so they go to college knowing what path they want. The Open Source Toolbox seems like it would really resonate with top students, which makes me think developing an effective educational outreach program, maybe even internships, could have a huge impact.
