The Potential of Place (Urban Permaculture and Spiritual Ethos)

I did a two part interview series for The Next Step podcast featuring a woman who has become inspired enough to construct a backyard permaculture garden in the middle of suburban sprawl. My feeling is that these interviews, one of the outside tour and another inside discussing the underlying philosophy of her work, are powerful moments for people to enjoy who might not already have caught on fully to the idea that these types of arrangements are not only needed but that they can be pleasing to…See More

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I host a podcast about transition topics and transformational group work called The Next Step. It deals in many of the areas that Transition is working on. In fact, Transition is basically a microcosm of all the things my show will cover, although it won't necessarily be Transition related always.

Recently, a Transition meetup started in my area and I'm looking forward to spreading these transitional spores of ours to locals. Convert the Locals, that should be a half-joked slogan for us all.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I'm interested in evolving our society towards a more responsible, self-sustaining, natural world. I think the idea of conscious evolution at the personal and social level is achievable. . .somehow. ;-)
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement? What can YOU teach us? What can your GROUP teach us?
Enthusiasm and organizer skills. I have a podcast which I have little time lately, but if others get involved in the project it'll be a more regular feed.(hint hint)

My opinion is that we become as educated on transitional issues, problems and solutions, and avoid the trap of zealous enthusiasm. We need this to become popular culture, not counter culture.

How can we change our conversations on the personal and social levels? How can we all start bringing in new ideas to the public discourse? How difficult is it to overcome the fear/anxiety/apprehension we might encounter when we wish to bring these subjects up in conversation? When we discuss this stuff, are we using emotional arguments mostly? How would we care to be approached on this grand situation if we weren't already aware of it.

DOUG LAIN is the genius behind this project. He's seeking to raise a small amount of funds for a great book that will be encapsulated in and expanded by this project below. Doug is host of the Diet Soap podcast which I highly recommend to all transitioners.

Hi Jarett, thanks for your friend invite (gladly!) and comment on the Peak Moment TV video I just uploaded here. I'm not entirely sure on where to post the material on TUS site, appreciate suggestions. You can find all 160 Peak Moment Conversations (and audios of recent programs) at www.peakmoment.tv/conversations. We also have DVDs from superb thinkers like Richard Heinberg, resources like an Intro to Permaculture. Prime material for Transitioners. ~Best~Janaia

Hi Jarett,
Appreciate your note; I apparently joined this site then promptly forgot! I also moved out of Illinois... but I am working on something that may create a nice handshake between us in the future. TBC!

No I do not know Will Allen well but have visited Growing Power at least twice. Will is on the board of the Urban Aquaculture group in Milwaukee and I am a permaculture advisor to that group but they have not been very active lately. We have talked about aquaculture issues a few times. Other than that I have no connection with Growing Power.
