Post-Petroleum Stress Disorder and the Economy

Posted on January 28, 2009 at 10:42am 0 Comments

As we confront a deteriorating economy, many of us feel frightened about our future job prospects.

In retrospect I can see I was fortunate when I had a medical emergency in 1991 and could no longer work as I had before.

My wife and I moved to Willits, California and began to network with others who wanted to support each other in this small, creative community of 15,000 people.

In 2004 we began to address Peak Oil and Climate Change as a community and started… Continue

Not knowing you, I can only hope you are joking with a title like that...

My husband suggests his own book, inspired by yours:
"How to Prosper as an Only Child When a Truck Runs Over Your Kid Brother."

Sarah,

Thanks for the inputs. I'll check the articles you referenced. If you'd to look over my book proposal, send me your e-mail and I'll send you a copy. I'm sure I'd value your feedback.

Hi, Jed. Great to meet another LCSW here. I believe that systems and social activist-oriented clinical SW's can bring a lot to TI both in our local communities and on a national level. I have heard so many positive things about Willets. We began our efforts here in 2005. Among one of our current projects is the formation of a mental health emergency response team, as we don't have one here currently. People hear generally drive from 30 - 60 minutes for mental health services.
I too think it would be great to have a forum for those who are unemployed to explore the upside of down or maybe a forum where people in general can explore the upside of down.
I will be eager to learn more about your book as I too am most interested in the psychological aspects of TI. I have written extensively on my blog on eco-nomic anxiety (http://eco-anxiety.blogspot.com/) and Linda Buzzell Saltzman and I wrote an article about The Waking Up Syndrome that appeared in Hope Dance last year (http://www.hopedance.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=413&Itemid=32) and is included in the book Ecotherapy which will be out in the Spring from Sierra Books.
Thank you for the information about your local currency. We're hoping to establish one or an time bank here and are seeking a local computer person to help us set it up. Your comments may help motivate us to move ahead.
Hope we can stay in touch.

I think its a great idea to have a forum where people who are out of work, or know people who are, can come together to discuss "the upside of down."

In retrospect I can see I was fortunate when I had a medical emergency in 1991 and could no longer work as I had before.

My wife and I moved to Willits, California and began to network with others who wanted to support each other in this small, creative community of 15,000 people.

In 2004 we began to address Peak Oil and Climate Change as a community and started WELL the Willits Economic LocaLization) network.

This year we are focusing on "food" and food security. We have created a local currency backed by something real, healthy, and tasty.

Unlike the $10 bill with the picture of Alexander Hamilton, our first Secretary of the Treasury, on it, which is backed by....nothing--my Mendo $10 bill is backed by my choice of one of the following:

11 pounds of pinto beans
11 pounds of brown rice
11 pounds of white rice
17 pounds of triticale.

Feels good to be carrying "money" around that really means something, is locally supported, and benefits the local community.

Our other major project is the book I am writing:

Post-Petroleum Stress Disorder: How to Survive and Grow Rich When the Ship of Civilization Sinks, which will give people the tools they need to make the transition off the sinking ship of "civilization," on to sustainable "arks," and finally into a new world that is truly healthy and sustainable for all.
