TEDxAsheville Aug 30, 2009, featuring many transition-friendly speakers

On the night of August 30, The Orange Peel is hosting a TEDxAsheville event. (TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-conference-like experience.) Our speakers are local to Asheville and most are speaking on incredibly transition-oriented topics such as global climate change, sustainable burials, and so on.The event will be free, first-come/first-seated, and will also feature several local performers, non-profit tables and some cool…See More

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
Just now learning about it, wanted to get more involved.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I firmly believe in the reality that peak oil is near (or past) and that we need to be preparing for greater localization of resources and sustainability in order to thrive in the coming decades.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement? What can YOU teach us? What can your GROUP teach us?
Sustainability skills: I grew up with a hippy mother who wanted all of us kids to be Laura Ingalls. :-) By the time I was in Jr. High, I could cut and chop wood, fire up and make dinner on a wood cookstove, grow my own food (including tending to chickens for eggs), sew my own clothes, etc.

Basically, I grew up living mostly sustainably and I have continued adding to my knowledge since then. I still garden and compost in the apt I live in now, and hope to find a way to buy a home and create a small urban homestead in the Asheville area some day.

Other useful skills: I'm a professional writer and have had training and experience as a life coach and public speaker. I basically live and work on the web and am very familiar with social media.

Hey Soni, do check out the podcast, I'm interested right now in talking with people who have some history of working with sustainability on the personal level. I think it's important to hear other people's trials, tribulations, triumphs, etc. It's one thing to listen to a keynote speaker at some conference, quite another and more personally connecting to hear a "regular guy/girl" talking about their experiences. I think the more we make transition real for people by giving them real life stories, the more comfortable people will be in striking out into unknown territory so to speak. . .

Hey Soni,

We're scheduling our first Transition meeting for Brevard at our pottery shop next Thursday, Jan. 7th at 6:30. This will be part of our "Greendrinks" series that we do once a month or so. I'll be showing a few documentaries. I thought I'd show "Crude Awakening" to initiate people to the concept of Peak Oil. And then, if people are still game, I'd like to show Transition 1.00. I'd love it if you could make it. If you can't, I'll at least try to keep you posted with what were doing over here in Brevard. Hopefully, this event will help to get the ball rolling.
