Self-intalling solar power

I'm an engineering PhD at RPI, and used to work with a solar powerinstaller in NYC. I'm currently self-installing a solar PV system, andwhen I'm finished I'd like to assist others on this. I'm very busy withschool at the moment but I can definitely advise. The benefit ofself-install in the counties that allow this upstate is you can saveabout $10-15k on the labor involved in an installation, even considering the NYSERDA per wattrebate. The system I'm installing was about $22k all told; I'm…See More

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I'm a PhD in power engineering at RPI. I do solar power for islanded systems (I did the Waterpod educational/arts project in 2009 in NYC Harbor, and just self installed a battery solar power system on my farm.)
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
Peak oil. I'd like to be eating in 10 years.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement? What can YOU teach us? What can your GROUP teach us?
I'm an electrical engineer, and just did a study for NYSERDA on the state of the art for power storage systems and how businesses can be built in NY State around batteries and storage systems needed for renewable energy.

hi tim,

where is preston hollow? i'm in eastern NY -- hudson valley, southeast of albany.

since august, i've been organizing Transition for Training (T4T)  to spark a movement in the upper hudson valley.  currently, we have a T4T scheduled for march 19-20 in greenwich NY, which is northeast of albany.  barbara price is doing great work to host the greenwich training:

www.carbon-negative.us/TT

it is possible the new albany TT group will hold a spring T4T, but nothing definite yet; i'll meet with albany TT tomorrow.

i also started building an online directory of local farms:

www.carbon-negative.us/RFFP

and last week i fininshed a major 8-page article about food production & climate change:

Happy Birthday Tim! Hope it's super. I just left a message at your home number. Look forward to talking soon about your interest in solar and batteries. I'm wondering if a user group of some sort might be in the making. Leave a message here or set up a connection with Skype with me. My ID is LSquiresSkype. Or, I'll call back sunday evening.

Welcome Tikm. Great to see your interest in Transition! Welcome to TRANSITION IN ACTION.

http://transitionus.ning.com/group/linktransitionnewyorkusa is your link to our new Transition page for your neighbors in New York. Feel free to join in the activities. Use the COMMENT WALL to say Hello to the others. Reinforce the good things they are doing. Mention something you're interested in. Ask a question. Start a discussion. Let me know if you would like to be an Admin on this page to help build and maintain your group's Resume. Have fun!

One more thing, on the local scene, does your work with the power systems have a Transition-supporting website, or blog, or listserv, or Facebook, or Meetup? If so, it would be spot on for all our members if you would consider including a link for engineering projects in our registry of organizations, products, services, Twitterers, Facebooks, Meetups, etc. supporting Transition and Sustainability. Here's the page to create the link -- http://transitionus.ning.com/groups/group/new. In fact, you might want to create a user group for Engineers -- "Engineers in Transition" or something like that...

You can see all our groups at http://transitionus.ning.com/groups. Use Search on this page to find a specific group. Let me know when you have questions about details.

Alas, one more thing. It would be super to see your photo -- Choose File on http://transitionus.ning.com/profiles/settings/editProfileInfo -- Let me know if you need assistance. I'll be delighted to do some photoshopping if needed.
