I feel like I've been taken hostage by the new terrorists: the banking industry and health insurers. Normal, hard working people are being terrorized out of their wits, their homes and their health. Lowering credit limits and raising interests rates to 25 or 30 percent is common now. Health insurers routinely rescind coverage just when a person really needs it. That is to say, when they begin to cost money. Unconscionable Math is an excellent analysis…

The Republican Right rarely bestows gifts. They were invited to the table but, resisting any proposal so far, it looks like the Obama administration may just blaze a new trail. Let's hope so. Their staunch refusal of the public option to reform health care gave way to consideration of cooperatives as a potential solution.

University of Wisconsin's Center for Cooperatives' Research… Continue

"When you are going through hell, keep going" advised Winston Churchill. Running a small business requires the courage and timing of a trapeze artist to keep all the gears synchronously shifting. In the frenzy before the collapse, we thought that major banks and corporations were too big to fail, the Titanic too big to sink. As the smoke of the economic collapse clears, we are reminded again that only death and taxes remain certain.

Will barter faires become the new green Wal-mart or E-Bay?
“Bartering is a medium in which goods or services are directly exchanged for other goods and/or services without a common unit of exchange (without the use of money). It can be bilateral or multilateral, and usually exists parallel to monetary systems in most developed countries, though to a very limited extent. Barter usually replaces money as the method of exchange in times of monetary crisis, when the currency is unstable…

Hi Folks...
I ran some searches and was surprised that I couldn't find one place with a selection of powerpoints to view, use in presentations or use as guides to create custom-designed powerpoints for HAM radio groups, EMA (Emergency Management, Rotary and other community groups.
Is there a centralized location for a library of presentation materials?
In the meantime, I have started a discussion on the Transition…

I have been doing two monthly sustainability video-discussion events for almost a 18 months. As usual, I didn't think to post the most recent events here, even they were on the Transition movement. I don't think I've ever had a response from this website. I was surprised by a nice turnout for both the Doylestown and the Warminster, PA events. Sold (at cost) several copies of the Trans Initiatives Primer. I missed out getting mailing list at both, but can recover most. I knew about half of the…

The Transition movement started as a response to the twin threats of global climate change and peak oil. The age of cheap energy is coming to an end. Managing this change is an unprecedented challenge on a global scale.
Transition Towns provide a grassroots model for meeting this challenge.

On the night of August 30, The Orange Peel is hosting a TEDxAsheville event. (TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-conference-like experience.) Our speakers are local to Asheville and most are speaking on incredibly transition-oriented topics such as global climate change, sustainable burials, and so on.
The event will be free, first-come/first-seated, and will also feature several local performers, non-profit tables and some…

The like-mindedness we need most, that will encourage and build enduring relationships among people who haven't gotten together before, is along the lines of "OMG, all our eggs are in one basket!" That's overlooked, not uncertain or controversial. The like-mindedness associated with positions in controversies, at first energizing (
I'm not alone and maybe we're becoming the majority!), easily becomes a trap, a kind of dead end. Or it doesn't serve when the going gets rough.
As…
