"It is my observation that some of the permaculture teachers and leaders

who have been designing and teaching for two decades or more seem to

communicate in a way that is less than optimally collaborative.

I'm not sure that I have any suggestions on how any perceived

schism might be repaired,...."…

Towards an alliance of the Transition and Commons movements

If transitioners and commoners are members of two sister movements, I'd say, the Commons movement is the younger sister. Although the commons is as old as humankind itself, as a self-aware social movement is only a toddler.

The "commons" has many descriptions. Here are three of my favorites:

“The commons is the social and political space where things get done and where people have a sense of belonging and have an element of control over their lives, providing sustenance,… Continue

Joanna Macy, Funny-Money & the Perils and Persistence of Business As Usual

The weekend of September 17th, world teacher, Buddhist philosopher, deep ecologist, activist and best-selling author Joanna Macy was in Chapel Hill. She gave several well-attended talks on the Great Turning and led work-shops in the Work That Reconnects, a self-, community-, and Earth-healing process laid out in her book (co-authored with Molly Young Brown) "Coming Back to Life." The workshop, which she has offered in days-long and day-long formats all over the world, opens people’s heart-minds… Continue

Too Big Not to Fail

Here’s an argument, adapted from "Life Rules," that Transitioners—whom I call “the already-converted”—can use to convince or at least challenge the assumptions of the as-yet-unconverted, those true believers in the possibility of doing business-as-usual against the odds of finiteness into the next century or millennium:

Global economic theory tends to rely on one particularly counterintuitive notion: that huge transnational corporations and organizations are not vulnerable to the… Continue

being the world's largest and most important living stores of carbon.

Tamera SolarVillage - New Micro-Biogas Plant

New Micro-Biogas Plant

Together with the urban planner and energy activist T. H. Culhane from the US, (see: solarcities.blogspot.com) the participants of the Global Campus built a new, small biogas plant within three days and finished another one that had been started last year. With the organic kitchen waste of just one day, enough gas for two hours of cooking can be produced. This way the solar kitchen can be complemented with a biogas driven stove at night or during rainy… Continue

Life Rules One Day at a Time

"For the viral global economy to cease to pose a threat to most of us and the Earth's immune system of natural communities, it would have to become something it cannot become: not global." Life Rules, p91
