A Call for Front Porches

Those of us familiar with what constitutes good urban design know that the front porch plays a central role in establishing a sense of friendliness and community on a residential street. So I am putting out a call to all municipalities, builders and developers, and homebuyers to accept nothing less than a house pulled close to the street and fashioned with a nice, big front porch that can hold a porch swing, a few Adirondack chairs, a mailbox, and nice big welcoming front door. With Halloween… Continue

How are you talking about Peak Oil this month?

Our group in Seattle is just starting our "awareness" campaign, which we're kicking off with a screening of "The End of Suburbia," as recommended by Rob in the Transition Handbook. But the book was still hot off the press when the economy here tumbled, sending oil prices way down. FOSL (Foundation of Sustainable Living) Transition Community in progress

FOSL had been forming for about three years. Many of us still live in Santa Cruz, CA, where we started our vision. We have bought a small 5 acre property in Cleone, outside of Ft. We chose Mendicino area because the Santa Cruz water is not sustainable for agriculture in the long run.

We have already… Continue

Check out my town's transition plans for 2020

I moved to Mankato Minnesota almost two years ago. The reason I chose to locate here was because Mankato had a transition plan in place, only they did not call it a transition plan. They call it Envision 2020. Check out the website for my city's plan http://www.envision-2020.com/ and also the final report http://www.envision-2020.com/documents/ENVISION2020FINALREPORT_000.pdf . I am excited to say we are working the plan.

Transition Louisville October 11 2008 Kick Off Meeting

An engaged group of about 25 Louisville citizens gathered at the library today for the kick off of Transition Louisville. The guest speaker, Michael Brownlee, co-founder of Transitions Boulder County, presented on peak oil, global warming, and the global economic crisis.

At the conclusion of the formal presentation we brainstormed an initial list of things to explore as we continue our journey to becoming a formal Transition Initiative.

Ideas generated:
