GLOBAL TRANSITION IN ACTION -- Putney Vermont USA -- Community Gardens Field Notes

When Howie Prussack, Putney farmer, stataed at Local Foods, Local Farms symposium in February that he wanted to see the two-acre field across from the Putney Coop become a community garden, people clapped and cheered. That dream is now a reality.

The Gateway Group that owns the field was delighted to have Transition Putney, in collaboration with the Putney Coop, turn the field into a commuinty gardening project that would promote the growing and consumption of local foods.

This week one-acre of the field was plowed and harrowed creating twenty 9’x12’ garden plots which are available to Putney gardeners to plant this year.. The rest of the one-acre garden is being planted in flowering buckwheat cover crop. Next year, the number of garden plots will increase and parts of the field will be planted in staple crops for the Putney Food Shelf.

TWelve people have already added their names to the Putney Community Garden sign-up sheet at the Putney Coop. Planting is scheduled to begin June 20th.

We would like to thank to the Putney Gateway Group for supporting this project, Howie Prussak for plowing, and the Putney School for harrowing. Many others are also helped with this project, and we will list all their names soon.
